The Openwork Foundation Cuba Cycle Challenge 2025: Day 3

By Ramon Puig, Advice on Wealth

This day the group became real cyclists.

The day started with a Los Caneyes breakfast for champions, Cuba style!! We first took a short bus ride to the Che Guevara mausoleum. It was built for him and 16 freedom fighters in 1967, almost the same number as we have cyclists in our group. Che Guevara has become the poster boy for communist countries worldwide and our own poster boy and housewife’s choice, Bill Colson, give us our morning exercise through Sunshine Mountain, before we set-off.

60km covered today. I had a delightful ride alongside David, who, when I asked him what training regime he used in preparation, thinking he might say gym classes, yoga or cycling, came out with a classic Geordie comment of "Darts!".

We had our first accident today when Donna decided to follow a railway track and hunt down a train ride, instead she just fell off, thankfully she was straight back up. A few moments later Emma became a true cyclist when she hit her front brake and went over the handlebars. Welcome to the cyclist fraternity!

The scenic cycle ride ended in the stunning city of Cienfuegos,  which translates at 'one hundred fires,' known for its export of sugar cane and rum. We were able to stop at the beautiful yacht club where Colin (our ride leader) is a member, because this is where his people are from, and we enjoyed a traditional menu of Cuban style rice, beans & chicken.
