The Openwork Foundation Cuba Cycle Challenge: Day Five

By Sue Colson

We did it! A successful challenge and many special memories in Cuba.

The day began with heartwarming news: David Sinclair welcomed a beautiful new granddaughter, Ada Rose. A perfect start to an unforgettable day.

Our morning brought a touch of comedy courtesy of Ramon Puig, who gallantly shared a lift with Petra Oakes. In the process, his helmet nearly knocked her out, her luggage went flying, and as she regained composure, the lift doors closed, whisking her back to square one, all while Ramon strolled off, blissfully unaware of the chaos.

Then came the real challenge: a gruelling 110 km ride. It started gently with a downhill stretch, and the surreal sight of bananas on bikes, thanks to leftover fancy-dress costumes, added extra comedy value to the proceedings. The ride was tough, claiming a few casualties: unfortunately, Bill Colson and Petra both took tumbles, and Thomas Folan battled with cramp. Yet, in true team spirit, everyone remounted and pushed on to the finish line.

Crossing that line was pure relief. We bid a fond farewell to our saddles and bikes, proud of our efforts and the impact our fundraising will have for the Foundation.

Along the way this week, we soaked in unforgettable sights: majestic old American cars roaring past in clouds of smoke, horses and oxen working the fields, vibrant Spanish colonial architecture, faded yet beautiful. Plus, the ever-present wonderful Cuban music was our soundtrack for the journey.

This challenge gave us more than miles; it gave us amazing memories. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. And if you’re inspired, we’d love to have you join us for next year’s adventure!

You can still support us here. Every donation makes a difference.
