How Openwork helps Michael Margai deliver for clients and build Perfect Protect

12/08/2026

For Michael Margai, Founder and Financial Planner at Perfect Protect Financial Planning, financial advice has always been about helping people make confident decisions and protect what matters most.

Since entering the profession in 2010, he has built a successful business serving clients across protection, mortgages and wider financial planning. Along the way, he has experienced the realities of building a business, developing his expertise and adapting to a changing profession. Through it all, he has remained focused on delivering good outcomes for clients while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

As Founder of Perfect Protect, Michael has built a business centred on long-term relationships, trust and meaningful financial guidance. He believes advisers achieve the greatest success when they combine technical expertise with genuine care for the people they support.

Today, with the backing of The Openwork Partnership, he continues to grow his business while benefiting from the support, expertise and resources available across the network.

An early fascination with finance

Michael's interest in financial services began long before he became an adviser.

"As a teenager, my late uncle introduced me to the stock market by encouraging me to track share prices in the daily newspapers. I kept a handwritten log of stock movements for over two years, and that's where my fascination with finance really began."

This early introduction to investing sparked a curiosity that would eventually shape his career. Developing an understanding of markets and financial decision-making at a young age helped establish the foundations for a profession dedicated to helping others achieve financial security.

After entering the industry in 2010, Michael started his career as a junior broker before moving into a Financial Consultant role focused primarily on protection and mortgages.

"I entered the profession in 2010 as a junior broker before becoming a Financial Consultant, advising mainly on protection and mortgages. After briefly stepping away to start a business, I realised I missed helping people make important financial decisions."

Like many advisers, Michael's career path wasn't entirely straightforward. Time spent running his own business gave him a broader commercial perspective, but it also reinforced what he enjoyed most about financial services: helping people navigate life's important financial choices.

"That led me back into financial advice, where I founded Perfect Protect and later expanded my qualifications into mortgages and wealth management."

Looking back, he believes the biggest lessons have come through experience.

"Looking back, the biggest lesson has been that confidence comes with experience. Every stage of my career has helped me grow, both as an adviser and as a business owner, and I'm still learning and improving every day."

Helping clients protect what matters most

Over the years, Michael has developed expertise across several areas of advice, but protection remains the area he finds most rewarding.

"My core areas of expertise are protection and mortgages, with protection being the area I enjoy most."

For many clients, conversations around protection are some of the most important financial discussions they will ever have. Whether supporting young families, business owners or individuals planning for the future, Michael enjoys helping people put measures in place that provide reassurance and financial resilience.

"I find real satisfaction in helping individuals and families put plans in place that provide financial security and peace of mind, whatever the future may bring."

Alongside protection and mortgages, he works with a broad range of clients including professionals, families, members of the African diaspora and those looking to remortgage.

Rather than focusing solely on an immediate need, Michael aims to understand a client's wider circumstances and objectives, identifying opportunities to support broader financial goals and longer-term planning.

"I also work closely with professionals, families, the African diaspora and clients looking to remortgage. I enjoy taking a holistic approach, looking beyond the immediate need to identify opportunities that support my clients' wider financial goals."

This relationship-led approach has helped him build a loyal client base and establish strong referral networks that continue to support the growth of the business.

Building Perfect Protect

Asked about the highlight of his professional life so far, Michael doesn't hesitate.

"Without doubt, the highlight of my professional life has been founding and growing Perfect Protect."

Building an advice business from the ground up takes commitment, resilience and a clear vision. For Michael, however, the greatest measure of success isn't business growth alone. It's the impact his business has had on clients over time.

"Building a business from the ground up has been very rewarding, but what gives me the greatest satisfaction is knowing we've helped so many individuals and families make confident financial decisions and protect what matters most to them."

One of the most rewarding aspects of running the business has been seeing relationships develop over many years, with clients returning for further advice and introducing friends and family.

"Seeing clients return years later and recommending their friends and family to us is something I'm especially proud of."

Those enduring relationships are testament to the trust that sits at the heart of financial advice and remain a key driver behind the continued growth of Perfect Protect.

Always looking to learn

Away from client meetings and running the business, Michael has a strong passion for learning and self-development.

"Outside of work, I'm fascinated by learning and personal development. Whether it's reading or studying."

That curiosity extends beyond financial services. He is constantly exploring new ideas, opportunities and ways to improve, both professionally and personally.

"I'm also always thinking of new business ideas! Even when I'm travelling or relaxing, I often find myself jotting down ideas for future ventures."

His entrepreneurial mindset and appetite for continuous improvement have played an important role in his business journey so far.

"My friends would probably say I find it hard to switch off…but I wouldn't have it any other way."

What makes a great adviser?

Having spent more than a decade working closely with clients, Michael believes that technical knowledge alone isn't enough to become a great adviser.

"I believe a good adviser is someone that clients can rely on long after the paperwork has been completed."

While qualifications and expertise are essential, he believes the most successful advisers are approachable, empathetic and committed to building lasting relationships.

"Technical knowledge is important, but so is being approachable, listening carefully and genuinely caring about the outcome."

In an increasingly digital world, those human qualities remain just as important as ever.

"The best advisers build relationships, not just client files, and are there to support people through life's changing circumstances."

It's an approach that has shaped the culture of Perfect Protect and continues to influence how Michael works with clients today.

The value of support and freedom

Building and growing an advice business requires more than technical expertise. Advisers need access to guidance, specialist knowledge and practical support that helps them solve problems, navigate complexity and continue delivering great client outcomes.

For Michael, being part of The Openwork Partnership means having access to a broad network of people who can help at different stages of the advice journey. From supervisory support and business development guidance through to operational assistance and technical expertise, the Partnership provides an additional layer of resource behind his business.

His T&C Supervisor helps provide challenge, guidance and oversight, supporting professional development while helping maintain high standards of advice. Alongside this, his Practice Development Manager provides support with business growth, helping identify opportunities, share best practice and act as a trusted sounding board for strategic decisions.

Where more specialist support is needed, Openwork's First Contact team helps advisers quickly access answers, expertise and solutions, reducing the time spent dealing with administration or navigating processes and allowing more time to be focused on clients.

"One of the things I value most about being part of The Openwork Partnership is the support that's available whenever you need it. Whether it's guidance from my T&C Supervisor or PDM or speaking to the Openwork First Contact team on more complex cases or system queries, there's always someone willing to help."

Advisers can benefit from access to learning opportunities, business development support, specialist expertise and a wider community of like-minded professionals, creating an environment that encourages long-term growth.

This combination of support and autonomy is something Michael particularly values. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach, The Openwork Partnership provides the infrastructure and expertise advisers need while allowing firms to build businesses that reflect their own strengths, ambitions and client propositions.

"I also like that Openwork genuinely encourages advisers and firms to grow. It provides the support, resources, and expertise to help you develop your business, while still giving you the freedom to build it in your own way."

For Michael, that balance has been instrumental in helping him grow Perfect Protect while remaining focused on what matters most: helping clients make confident financial decisions and protecting their financial futures.
His story demonstrates how the right support can help advisers build successful businesses without sacrificing independence, creating an environment where both advisers and clients can thrive.
